Thursday, July 18, 2019- Friday, July 19, 2019
Location: Washington, DC

The 2019 Autism CARES Meeting will be held in-person on July 18-19 at the historic Mayflower Hotel in downtown Washington, DC.

This meeting, will be an opportunity for MCHB-funded CARES legislation grantees (representing research, training, and state demonstration stakeholders) to share information about activities within their respective networks, discuss emerging trends, and facilitate meaningful collaboration.

Meeting Theme and Agenda:

The theme for this year's meeting is
Ten Years of Autism CARES Act Programs: Improving the Lives of People with ASD/DD, their Families, and Communities

The meeting will be organized around three strands:
1) Increasing Equity
2) Improving Systems Performance
3) Achieving Population-Level Outcomes

Plain Language Definitions for Strands:
"Increasing Equity" means making the system more fair. Some people with ASD/DD have a hard time accessing doctors, jobs and other services because of their race, income or other identities. This strand will focus on how we are making life better for people with disadvantages.

"Improving Systems Performance" means getting programs and providers to work together so more people can get their needs met, both now and in the future. People with ASD/DD often need many different services to help them live in their communities. This strand will focus on ways that programs connect with each other to reach common goals.

"Achieving Population-Level Outcomes" means making things better for whole communities, not just for one person at a time. We can measure how things are getting better with numbers like employment rates or school statistics. This strand will focus on how we know if we are improving life for whole groups of people.

Note about language: Recognizing that the autism community has diverse opinions about terminology related to the identities of autistic individuals/individuals with autism, we will be following the language used by congress within the Autism CARES legislation: "individuals with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disabilities" or the related abbreviation "ASD/DD."

Call for Proposals:

Submit a Proposal Button

The call for proposals is now available and will remain open until May 20, 2019 at 11:59pm EST. Download a full preview of the proposal submission form here to prepare your draft content before submitting your proposal through the weblink below.

We are accepting proposals from any current or former Autism CARES grantees interested in sharing the impact of their work in any one of the event strands: increasing equity, improving systems performance, or achieving population-level outcomes.  Submissions should indicate whether they are propsing a poster presentation to be included in a poster symposia or a 60 minute concurrent session. Both poster symposia and concurrent sessions will be held on Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2019.

Previously reported content is welcome. In responses, to questions that we've been receiving from network members, we would like to clarify that submissions do not need to be new, unpublished content. The focus of the event is to demonstrate the depth and breadth of impact that the Autism CARES network has had over the last decade. All meaningful and impactful work and results will be considered for inclusion.

Selection announcements will be sent no later than June 14, 2019.

These activities are hosted by AUCD's ITAC, in collaboration with AMCHP's SPHARC and HRSA-MCHB. For more information, please contact Sarah DeMaio (sdemaio@aucd.org) at AUCD.

Ancillary Meeting (Invitation Only)

LEND Directors will be meeting on Wednesday, July 17 from 10:00am - 5:00pm ET in the State Room at the Mayflower Hotel. More information coming soon. MCHB strongly encourages LEND Directors to attend all in-person technical assistance meetings and should make every possible effort to do so. In the event that a LEND Director has an unavoidable conflict, they should designate another leader (e.g. Associate Director, Training Director) to attend in their place. Each program should have at least one but no more than three representatives, as this meeting is focused on high-level content. Please contact Ben Kaufman at AUCD for more information.
