Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (MT UCEDD) announces recipient of the 2019 Community Investment Fund
In 2015, the Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (RIIC) established the Community Investment Fund (CIF). CIF awards support innovative projects or programs that help Montanans with disabilities live, learn, work and play alongside people without disabilities. Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) members use their leadership and advocacy skills to review each application, evaluate the merits of each proposal, and award the funds.

WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities Developing on Campus College Program for Grads with I/DD
High school graduates with intellectual and developmental disabilities will soon be joining West Virginia University's campus through a new program developed to prepare them for independence that will provide improved academic, social engagement and real-world work experiences. Students, ages 18-23, enrolled in the program "tentatively named The Country Roads Program" will live in a shared residential housing arrangement, participate in social activities across campus and receive career education and training.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Investigator Discovers One More Piece to the Autism Puzzle
Mutations in a subunit of a receptor that binds the major inhibitory neurotransmitter GABAA in the brain have been linked, through a common mechanism, to epilepsy, autism and intellectual disability, researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and colleagues report. Jing-Qiong "Katty" Kang, M.D., Ph.D. "This work represents a critical piece in the whole puzzle we are working on, the impaired GABAergic pathway in epilepsy, autism and intellectual disability," said the paper's corresponding author, Jing-Qiong "Katty" Kang, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Neurology and Pharmacology and a Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) investigator.

Kennedy Krieger Institute hosts 9th Annual Room to Grow: Journey to Cultural and Linguistic Competency Conference (MD UCEDD/LEND)
Kennedy Krieger Institute hosted the 9th Annual Room to Grow: Journey to Cultural and Linguistic Competency Conference on September 17th 2019. Harolyn Belcher, MD, MHS, Director for the Center for Diversity in Public Health Leadership at Kennedy Krieger Institute welcomed over 180 attendees and addressed this year's theme of ensuring inclusion and provided updates on what we have learned since the publication of the National Academies of Sciences' important report entitled, "Neurons to Neighborhoods".

New Publication on Transportation Patterns for Working-age Americans with Disabilities (NH UCEDD)
A recently published paper by Megan Henly and Debra Brucker at the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire analyzed data on travel patterns to consider ways in which people with disabilities differ from people without disabilities in their daily transportation.

CDC-AUCD Leadership Opportunity: Act Early Ambassadors-State or Territorial Liaisons to CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." Program
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) with support from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), announce a funding opportunity for Act Early Ambassadors to work with CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." (LTSAE) program to improve early identification of developmental delays and disabilities, including autism. Applicants from the following states are eligible to apply for two available Ambassadorships: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, West Virginia.

Minnesota LEND Fellows Partner with Community Organization to Promote Mindfulness
Families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often report chronic and high levels of stress. A group of MNLEND Fellows are partnering with a local nonprofit organization, Communities Engaging Autism (CEA), to support families as they face the challenges of raising children with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDD).

Dr. Meredith Repke, RTC:Rural Research Associate, and Dr. Catherine Ipsen, RTC:Rural Director, recently published a paper in the Disability and Health Journal titled "Differences in social connectedness and perceived isolation among rural and urban adults with disabilities."
