Biomarkers Can Help Improve Clinical Trials for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders

In the past decade, many large-scale randomized controlled pharmaceutical clinical trials for children with neurodevelopmental disorders have struggled to demonstrate child clinical changes. In a recent study, researchers from University of Washington IDDRC discuss how biomarkers can help improve clinical trials for children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

SPARK Uncovers Moderate-effect Genes that Cause Autism

A recent study at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital-one of AUCD's Intellectual and Developmental Disability Research Centers or IDDRCs-used SPARK data to identify a new class of moderate-effect genes that are associated with less likelihood of intellectual disability and may reveal more about autism and brain development.

Zebrafish Advance as a Model Organism for Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited form of autism, caused by variants in the FMR1 gene. Scientists have developed animal models of the disorder to better understand the consequences of the genetic mutation and to see if they can intervene. In a recent study in The Journal of Neuroscience, Geoffrey Goodhill, PhD, Professor of Neuroscience and Developmental Biology at Washington University School of Medicine, and his team describe the utility of zebrafish larvae in recapitulating features of Fragile X.

An Overview of the Resource Finder at the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities

The Resource Finder is a project of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD), housed within Kennedy Krieger Institute. The project provides a valuable tool for patients, students, families, and professionals, allowing them to obtain information and access resources on intellectual and developmental disabilities. Community members can call, email or submit an online form requesting information, resources, or services based on their specific needs. The program coordinator, Kristine Nellenbach, compiles and disseminates personalized resources and information in response to every inquiry that is received. The Resource Finder is available to anyone, regardless of age, location, language, or disability.

Delaware LEND Gets New Co-director

Dr. Sarah Mallory has joined Dr. Beth Mineo as co-director of the Delaware LEND program, led by the University of Delaware's Center for Disabilities Studies. The Delaware LEND is part of a "national network" of training programs for pre-professionals, professionals, self-advocates and family members that promotes interdisciplinary, culturally competent, family-centered care.

Dr. Arnold receives the American Psychiatric Assocation's 2023 Frank J. Menolascino Award

Congratulations to Dr. Arnold at The Ohio State University Nisonger Center who will receive the American Psychiatric Assocation's 2023 Frank J. Menolascino Award for Psychiatric Services for Persons with Intellectual Disability/Developmental Disabilities. This award will be presented at the APA Annual Meeting in May.

GEAR UP's First Faculty Fellow, Mrs. Young-Weatherspoon from Hearne High School

The Heart of Texas GEAR UP program is a grant project funded through the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of this project is to support and empower the Class of 2026 to fulfill their potential in order to achieve post high school success. Iowa's UCEDD Leads EPSDT Shared Language Initiative

The Care for Kids grant program team at Iowa's Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD, Iowa's UCEDD) is leading a Shared Language Initiative to support the work of the state's Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) interagency stakeholder workgroup. The Shared Language Initiative is intended to develop a list of common terms and concepts to be used by our stakeholder workgroup and agencies to make it easier for patients, families, and providers to better understand EPSDT benefits and how they differ from other insurance benefits like CHIP. The Initiative will also support statewide efforts to promote EPSDT and its services, and meet EPSDT goals.

Jennifer Sulewski Named Associate Director and Assistant Research Professor at the Institute on Disability

The Institute on Disability is pleased to announce that Jennifer Sulewski, PhD, has been named Associate Director of the Institute on Disability (IOD), as well as Assistant Research Professor. As a Senior Research Associate and Project Manager at the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at UMass Boston, Sulewski brings knowledge and an interest in community life engagement, evaluation, community building, and employment services and supports to this new and unique position at the IOD.

A research team at University of Colorado School of Medicine, JFK Partners, led by Judy Reaven, Ph.D. has been approved for a $2,780,297 million funding award by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to study A Comparison of Two School-Based Interventions to Manage Anxiety in Autistic Students.

Kentucky Employment First Welcomes Katie Wolf Whaley as New Council Chair

On December 2nd, 2022, Kentucky welcomed Katie Wolf Whaley as the new chair of Kentucky's Employment First Council. Employment First practices the idea that competitive integrated employment should be considered the first and primary option for people with disabilities who are eligible and desire to be employed. Marnie Morneault Appointed as Chair of Maine's Interagency Coordinating Council (ME UCEDD)

Marnie Morneault, a research associate from the University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (ME UCEDD) has been appointed as Chair of Maine's Interagency Coordinating Council (ICC). The ICC is a required component of the early intervention system in every state.
