Minnesota LTSAE, MNLEND & MN Latino Childcare Providers Collaboration

MNLEND Fellow, Alice Kraiza, housed in the ICI at the University of Minnesota, is collaborating with leaders of the Latino Childcare Providers Network (La Red), a Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN)provider group based out of Richfield and Bloomington, Minnesota. La Red/The Network's Director, Ruth Evangelista, and Alice are developing a new training program on early developmental milestones and signs of Autism using "Learn the signs. Act Early." materials and resources for the wider Latinx FFN network. Per Evangelista, "I believe this training is a good for la Red.

Portland Maine LEND Holds Annual Family Picnic

"The family picnic is the first step of our family-led experiences for LEND Trainees. We welcomed 5 families during the picnic and solicited more in the process. Each LEND trainee will be matched with a family that fits their learning goals. Host families will teach the trainees about everyday life with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Trainees will play, eat, and enjoy family life with their host family and in the process they will learn deep lessons that they will carry through into their leadership. Trainees may also accompany children to appointments, school planning, activities, and family experiences," explains LEND Training Coordinator, Clinical Professor and occupational therapist Dr. Kathyrn Loukas.

Texas A&M System Creates Collaborative Learning Center (TX UCEDD)

The Texas A&M University System wants to bring together children and older Texans in a place where everyone can learn and thrive. The Texas A&M University System and private developers broke ground Tuesday on an intergenerational care facility in College Station. The first part of the project will focus on children and will provide educational experiences in a new preschool. Later, as part of a broader complex, an assisted living center for older adults will be added to the site.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) Explores the Right to Make Choices

Noted disability public policy advocate Jonathan Martinis, J.D., senior director for Law and Policy at the Burton Blatt Institute at Syracuse University, delivered the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) Martin Luther King, Jr., Commemorative Lecture "Supported Decision-Making: Protecting Rights, Ensuring Choices" in January 2018.

CDS asks Lawmakers to Open Welcome Mat for Accessible Housing (HI UCEDD)

A comprehensive CDS research report shows that Hawaii has a severe shortage of accessible housing to accommodate people with disabilities, including a large segment of the elderly who are prone to mobility challenges. The CDS report is at the center of two legislative bills that take aim at solving the problem. Both measures were introduced in the House and Senate in January and are moving along for further consideration by lawmakers. Find out more about why supporters of these initiatives say that taking action now to increase the supply of affordable and accessible housing is critical to the health and well-being of Hawaii's families.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Arkansas

Arkansas (AR) appeared on a local TV Station, KATV 7 News, to promote Nutrition is for Everyone (NIFE) AR and demonstrate a healthy adapted recipe that used in their classes. Nutrition advocate Carly Luck, created Veggie Wraps on live TV and did a fantastic job! KATV 7 News is excited to have her back on air very soon.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Louisiana

In February,Senior Program Manager Tanisha Clarke from AUCD visited the Louisiana Nutrition is for Everyone (NIFE LA) in New Orleans to observe activities and meet & greet the team members. Additionally, the NIFE LA project wrapped up its fourth Unified Fitness Club class offered through its partnership with Special Olympics Louisiana. At each weekly class, athletes and their families engaged in 30 minutes of guided physical activity and 30 minutes of interactive nutrition education.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Mississippi

Nutrition is for Everyone Mississippi (NIFE MS) held the project's second nutrition education workshop last month. Seventeen students and their instructors from transition classes at Gulfport and Pass Christian high schools participated. The workshop was held at the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) office in Long Beach at The University of Southern Mississippi's Gulf Park campus. Deputy Ambassador LaShaundrea Crook, MS, RDN, LD, led the workshop and hands-on snack activity, and Deputy Ambassador Taylor Carley provided workshop support.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Oklahoma

The Deputy Nutrition Ambassadors at Nutrition is for Everyone Oklahoma (NIFE OK) are teaching a class this month for Spanish-speaking families on how to meet the dietary guidelines using MyPlate. NIFE OK has also partnered with the LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) program and is in the process of developing a curriculum for healthy meal planning and food safety for people with disabilities and their friends and family.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Tennessee

Nutrition is for Everyone Tennessee (NIFE TN) was able to distribute Nutrition is for Everyone information (including social media connections) at a 1-day workshop for professionals and families related to intellectual and developmental disabilities. This was a great opportunity to provide some nutrition resources to physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals! There are several more workshops scheduled in upcoming months across the state, expanding NIFE TN's reach with health care professionals as well as families.

The Center for Leadership in Disability Co-Hosts 10th Annual Georgia Positive Behavior Support Conference (GA UCEDD/LEND)

The Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) in the School of Public Health at Georgia State University (GSU), co-hosted the 10th-annual Georgia Association of Positive Behavior Support (Georgia APBS) conference on November 28-29, 2017. The 2017 Georgia APBS Conference had over 100 presentations and 1,400 registrants. Georgia APBS is a network state under the national Association for Positive Behavior Support (www.apbs.org). According to the Association for Positive Behavior Support, positive behavior support is defined as "a set of research-based strategies used to increase quality of life and decrease problem behavior by teaching new skills and making changes in a person's environment.

Vanderbilt Consortium LEND

The Vanderbilt Consortium LEND program has provided far reaching opportunities for trainees to gain expertise in family-centered care, to become familiar with community resources, and to develop an interprofessional problem solving mindset. In addition to providing rigorous leadership training and an intensive 24-week core series on topics ranging from life course to ethics, from specific diagnoses to medical home, from newborn screening to policy, the core curriculum and leadership seminars have reinforced the importance of interprofessional and family-centered care within the healthcare setting. These learning experiences have aided our understanding of our role as part of a healthcare team and have helped expand our knowledge of the roles of other professionals we work alongside.

WAVE Assists in Web Accessibility (UT UCEDD)

WebAIM is a project out of the Center for Persons with Disabilities at Utah State University. While WebAIM began in 1999 as a FIPSE-funded grant to assist those in higher education with the task of "Keeping Web Accessibilty In Mind", it has since grown to help almost every sector of society with their digital accessibility challenges.

Dental Health Care Challenges and Barriers for Persons with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (MN LEND)

In our January 25th MNLEND cohort session, we had the honor to hear Katie Anderson, DDS 4th year dental student at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, 2nd year LEND Fellow, present information on "Common Dental Challenges and Preventive Dental Care for Persons with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.
