Montana's (MT UCEDD) Children's Autism Waiver Outcomes

April 2, 2013

In 2009, the State of Montana requested and received a waiver to provide intensive, applied behavior analysis to 50 young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.  Services which consist of 20 hours a week of direct service, were provided to children across the State of Montana.  The State contracted with the Rural Institute and The University of Montana to design the services, provide professional development, provide technical assistance and assist in program evaluations.

The service is a three year service and as such the first group of participants completed the program in 2012.  Data collected on these children indicate:

  • 48.6% of participants scored as non-autistic on the CARS, meaning that the child's autism symptoms have reduce significantly enough to no longer score in the clinical range
  • 65% receive general education services
  • 65% have full access to the community
  • 77% no longer meet eligibility requirement for other DDP services
