AUCD expresses strong disappointment over the Senate's recent vote against ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The final vote of 61-38 was five votes short of the 2/3 vote needed to ratify. U.S. Ratification of the CRPD would mean international opportunities for Americans with disabilities, and now is not the time to deny those individuals who choose to work, study, travel, and serve abroad the right to accessibility, respect for inherent dignity, and full and effective participation and inclusion in society.  AUCD continues to work with the U.S. International Council on Disabilities and other disability rights organizations to educate each Senator about the implications of their vote and the need to support the treaty in the 113th Congress. Ratifying the treaty opens the door for an international market of accessible American products, all while celebrating our nation's long history in protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
