International Association of Jewish Vocational Serices

Location

Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Washington, D.C.

Program Summary

The overall goal of the project is to provide outreach to and recruitment of young people with a broad range of disabilities in ten cities and regions across eight states and the District of Columbia for the purpose of enrolling them in national service programs. Youth Service America (YSA) is the primary partner and Big Brothers Big Sisters pledges its full support. Together, they provide information on national service to disability organizations, establish recruitment strategies, and help adapt national service programs to work with people with disabilities. Recruiters work intensively with national service programs in each city to increase the number of youth with disabilities in national service and to develop a model process of outreach and recruitment.

Goals

  • Reach 15,000 youth with disabilities, 1,500 per city, through targeted, active marketing and outreach campaigns.
  • Recruit 750 youth with disabilities, 75 per city, into national service.
  • Create a national outreach/marketing campaign targeting youth with disabilities in 10 cities.

Activities

  • Each of the IAJVS affiliates will hire a part-time recruiter who will work directly with their YSA partner at the local level. The IAJVS recruiters will:
  • Identify the broad range of service opportunities available locally.
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment to the target population by approaching schools, post secondary training programs, agencies, groups, and organizations serving them.
  • Help match youth with disabilities to specific national service assignments.

Partners

Partners include the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services affiliates in the cities listed above, Youth Service America, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

YSA will contribute to the project by:

  • Reviewing marketing and recruitment materials and training curriculum.
  • Helping IAJVS and affiliate staff identify local affiliates that can partner with IAJVS member agencies in each of the ten participating YSA communities.
  • Disseminating project information via the YSA website and National New Briefing.
  • Providing access to SERVENET, a web-based database that matches volunteers of all ages.
