A state-of-the-science conference designed for researchers, policy makers,
consumers, and advocates of independent living.

This state-of-the-science conference is the culmination of four years of translational research designed to enhance full community participation by people with disabilities. Researchers with the Research and Training Center on Measurement and Interdependence in Community Living (RTC/MICL) have used multiple methods and measures to discover, assess and intervene in both personal and environmental factors related to community participation.
"Community Participation by People with Disabilities: How Do We Measure Up?" will bring together researchers, policy makers, consumers, service providers and advocates of independent living to explore the latest findings in the areas of independent living, health care, measurement processes and outcomes, participation and access for people with disabilities (physical accessibility, access to services), advocacy, rehabilitation, administration, and related topics. They will discuss results, obstacles and the next steps.
Full community participation by people with disabilities is a core element of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research's (NIDRR) long range plan. The recent publication of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) has also drawn attention to the concept of participation as a gold standard for outcome measurement in independent living and rehabilitation.
This conference is sponsored by RTC/MICL, a five-year project sponsored by NIDRR. The conference will precede the annual conference of the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL), scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 1, so participants can attend two conferences with one trip.
Focus on Knowledge Creation and Knowledge Translation
The two-day conference is designed to focus on science the first day and practical application the second day for an expanded audience that will include APRIL pre-conference attendees.
Thursday, Oct. 28 (Day 1)
will focus on scientific findings and intervention research related to the overall theme of measuring community participation
by people with disabilities
Friday, Oct. 29 (Day 2)
will focus on knowledge translation, emphasizing the practical applications of research to enhance community participation by people with disabilities.
