Updates from the State Public Health Autism Resource Center

April 12, 2017

AMCHP's State Public Health Autism Resource Center (SPHARC) has released several new resources and technical assistance opportunities designed to aid and assist Autism and other Developmental Disabilities (ASD/DD) grantees.

Celebrating Autism Awareness Month
AMCHP is facilitating various activities in honor of Autism Awareness Month including sharing events and resources via AMCHP's
Facebook and Twitter pages, updating SPHARC's state calendar with autism awareness activities, and conducting virtual coffee talks open to any interested attendees.

AMCHP's coffee talks are 30 minute virtual calls where expert speakers or youth do a short presentation of 10-15 minutes, and engage the audience in a group discussion related to the topic of interest. On April 19th 2-3pm ET, AMCHP will be hosting a "Telehealth and Autism" coffee talk featuring Mei Wa Kwong, Policy Advisor and Project Director at the Center for Connected Health Policy. To register for this event, click here. Look out for more coffee talks as they are confirmed via AMCHP's Facebook and Twitter pages or on the SPHARC website.

ASD/DD State Grantees at the 2017 AMCHP Annual Conference
AMCHP's 2017 Annual Conference had a variety of sessions focused on Autism and other Developmental Disabilities, and many of them featured HRSA State Autism Grantees. Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Texas and Tennessee led a session called "Solving the Autism Puzzle for Your State: A Review of ASD/DD Planning & Implementation Activities from Four States" which provided overviews of their HRSA grant activities as well as results and lessons learned from their projects. In addition, Iowa's Regional Autism Assistance Program (RAP) conducted their own session called "Iowa RAP: Enhancing Effective Partnerships to Enhance Systems of Care While Building Sustainable Programs" highlighting RAP's team roles, strategies and lessons learned to ensure sustainability beyond their funding period.

Resources on these sessions and others are available via the SPHARC and AMCHP conference website. AMCHP's most recent PULSE issue also features the AMCHP conference and sessions of interest.

On the Horizon for State Grantees

As mentioned in the previous Developments issue, SPHARC, in partnership with HRSA, is supporting the new Autism Community of Learners state grantee cohort. Grantees include:

  • Delaware
  • Rhode Island
  • Washington
  • Wisconsin

This cohort has been participating in monthly technical assistance calls, and through these calls, there has been a growing need for more support and guidance around the Family Navigation piece of their work (See Nov/Dev PULSE article for more background). Because of this need, the 2017 Peer-to-Peer Exchange will focus on Family Navigation and will feature the Rhode Island state team due to their vast experience in Family Navigation and coordination of services. Any resources and/or reflections will be shared following the meeting.
