Waisman Center (WI) Welcomes William E. MacLean, Jr., PhD, as Associate Director

In August 2014, Bill MacLean, PhD, will join the Waisman Center as the associate director of the University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). MacLean is currently a professor of psychology at the University of Wyoming and executive director of the Wyoming Institute for Disabilities, also a UCEDD. He earned a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from George Peabody College for Teachers of Vanderbilt University in 1980 and completed a clinical internship in pediatric psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981. He returned to Peabody where he spent the next 15 years as a professor in the Department of Psychology and Human Development.

"We are thrilled to have Bill join the Waisman Center," said Marsha R. Mailick, PhD, director of the Waisman Center and Vaughan Bascom and Elizabeth M. Boggs Professor. "Bill brings tremendous leadership in the field of developmental disabilities, and his research and experience will benefit the many individuals and families who receive services and trainings through the Waisman Center."

In 1996 MacLean moved to the University of Wyoming where he served as the Chair of the Department of Psychology and director of the clinical psychology training program. MacLean was editor of the American Journal on Mental Retardation from 2002 to 2008 and is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Mental Health Research in Intellectual Disabilities. He was elected president of the Division on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities of the American Psychological Association and was a member of the Human Development and Aging Study Section of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review. MacLean is a Fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the American Psychological Association and the Society for Pediatric Psychology.

His research focus is on behavior problems in children with developmental disabilities and children's adaptation to chronic physical conditions such as hemophilia, asthma, and childhood cancer.

Dan Bier, MPA, MSW, CAE, is retiring in July after 15 years as UCEDD associate director.
