Dr. Samantha Ross will share updates on a current AIR-P Scholars Project that has engaged autistic youth and their parents as stakeholders to evaluate the construct validity of flourishing items within the National Survey of Children's Health. Some researchers consider children to be “flourishing” when they have positive relationships with peers and family, are motivated in school, and show curiosity for new things. We conducted cognitive interviews to better understand how autistic youth and parents make meaning of a 10-item Flourishing Item Set and the relevance of these items to their lived experiences. Dr. Ross will discuss preliminary findings from cognitive interviews in the context of related research highlighting concerns of measurement bias. She will further share ongoing efforts by the research team to engage stakeholders in revisions to the survey item set, and co-producution of 'flourishing conversation toolkit', to enhance the applicability of this measurement tool among autistic youth.
Presenters
Dr. Samantha M. Ross is an AIR-P scholar and an assistant professor of adapted physical activity in the School of Sport Sciences at West Virginia University. Dr. Ross aims to enhance wellbeing among children with disabilities through physical activity participation experiences. Her current scholarship supports this goal by (1) evaluating population-level measurement practices to effectively identify and monitor positive health behaviors of children with disabilities; and (2) engaging in capacity building efforts to facilitate research co-constructed with disability community members. Dr. Ross applies a Critical Disability Studies lens when investigating current practices within her field, and was recognized as the 2023 Hally Poindexter Young Scholar by the National Association of Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE).
