Don't Keep it on the Shelf: Developing and Disseminating Information in Practical Ways
Details
Summary:As UCEDDs, LENDs, and IDDRCs, we have an obligation/are required to share the information we glean from our research and model services with a wide array of audiences. Although publishing information in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at professional conferences are important dissemination tools, those strategies alone can make information inaccessible to those outside academia (and often even to those within). This webinar will include examples of practical products as well as dissemination strategies, goals, and procedures used by the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (TN UCEDD, IDDRC, LEND) for sharing research and model services with diverse audiences.

Research to Practice: HealthMatters for People with IDD: Building Communities of Practice for Health
Details
Summary:The importance of accessible health promotion initiatives continues to be an issue within the IDD populations as age-related problems and lack of environmental control impacts their health needs. These challenges show the need for the scaling up of evidence-based programs and health promotion efforts into the communities where people with IDD live, work, and play.

Suicide Screening and Prevention in the Autism Community: New Developments, New Perspectives
Details
Summary:An expanding body of research into suicidality and autism documents that individuals with ASD are at a significantly increased risk of suicide. Furthermore, traditional screening tools and mental health interventions have limited use in working with individuals with ASD.
This webinar began with an understanding of the issue from the perspective of the autistic self-advocacy community, exploring the challenges to screening and prevention within the mental health service system as it is today. We also reviewed the epidemiological background of suicide as a national and international public health crisis and what we know about how it impacts the ASD/ID population. We heard about a NIMH study underway aimed at developing a suicide risk screening tool for youth and adults with ASD/ID/DD. Finally, we reviewed specific interventions to address suicidality in autistic children and adults followed by strategies for promoting positive mental health for individuals with ASD who are at risk.
