Summary:
People with disabilities want friendships and relationships as much as anyone else. Unfortunately, there is a lack of appropriate education out there to support safe and healthy relationships. The rate of sexual assault is 7 times higher for individuals with intellectual disabilities than for those without. The Sexual Health SIG is hosting Katie Thune from Mad Hatter Wellness and the author of Sexuality for All Abilities to talk about how we can work together to lower that statistic by supporting the sexual health for this population through conversations, education and awareness.

Using real self-advocate questions from a survey, we will have three professional sexuality educators answering questions about sexual relationships. The sexuality educators will talk about questions from the survey like: How do I meet someone? How do you know if someone is your boyfriend or girlfriend? What exactly does consent mean? How do I talk with my partner? Is a non-disabled partner at risk for having sex with a disabled partner? How to be gay?

Summary:
Many people with disabilities experience profound marginalization in multiple human rights domains, including disparities in sexual and reproductive health. This webinar will address the rights to sexual citizenship of people with disabilities and ways to advance sexual self-advocacy as a best-practice strategy to facilitate empowerment among people with disabilities. Findings from an exploratory study that examined how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities define and experience the concept of sexual self-advocacy will be discussed.
