Project Description
The Alabama UCDD presents a broad based program to address the needs of and expand resources and services available to individuals and families with developmental disabilities. Guided by our Mission Statement and our philosophy, we are committed to advancing our program in a responsible, responsive, and culturally competent manner. The present application reflects the input of consumers and faculty through close collaborations with our Consumer Advisory Committee and our many partners, including the Alabama Developmental Disabilities Planning Council, the Alabama Protection and Advocacy Organization, and the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. These collaborations have assisted us in identifying the needs of individuals and families in Alabama with developmental disabilities: the prevalence of individuals with developmental disabilities, the dearth of properly trained professionals, the limited economic and health resources, and the traditionally underserved African American and Native American, as well as the emerging Spanish-speaking communities. This proposal addresses principal themes developed in collaboration with our consumers of Early Intervention, Education, Health, Employment, Housing, Transportation, and Quality Assurance through the Core Functions: Training, Community Services and Technical Assistance, Research and Dissemination. Specific goals are embedded within each Core Function and measurable outcomes are presented for each. Progress towards achieving these goals will be assessed in close collaboration with the Consumer Advisory Committee, which will be asked to convene three times per year to provide advice and guidance. Accomplishment of these objectives will demonstrate the commitment of the Alabama UCDD to "make a difference".
