Core Description

The purpose of this Core is to provide critical imaging technology, project advice and expertise for the analysis of neural tissue at the cellular and systems levels.

Services

Confocal and Digital Imaging Services

Members of the IDD Research Center receive a discount for services from the University of Chicago BSD Microscopy Core. This Core offers digital light and confocal microscopy, and the facility is located on the First floor of the Knapp Center.

Small Animal Imaging Services

Non-invasive imaging techniques including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), computed tomography (CT), and ultrasound (US) are emerging technologies for the study of brain structure and function in animal models of normal and abnormal development. The objective of the Small Animal Imaging Subcore is to provide IDDRC researchers with access to these facilities and to introduce them to the power of these methods for the study of normal and experimentally modified animal development. The focus of this Subcore is on funding IDDRC investigators with Pilot Project grants, which will serve to demonstrate to researchers how these imaging technologies might accelerate their research programs and allow them to collect preliminary data on feasibility for grant applications.

Gene Expression Services

The purpose of this Subcore is to instruct IDDRC researchers in standard and advanced in situ hybridization (ISH) techniques, to provide them with the facilities and troubleshooting advice they need to carry out ISH experiments on embryos, tissue sections, and cultured cells harvested from model and non-model organisms, and to drive the development of new ISH technologies that may be of use to IDDRC members.
