Project Description:
The objective of this project is to create a clinically useful, valid, reliable, and culturally adapted version of the FCVIQ for use with children in the United States who have or are suspected of having CVI. This instrument will fill a gap in current assessment procedures by providing a rigorous tool to identify children with CVI and guide interventions. The assessment will be appropriate for use by many professionals involved in caring for children with CVI in the US, including medical specialists, educators, therapists, and others. This project will improve the quality of health care for children with CVI by delivering an evidence-based and culturally relevant assessment. The new tool can be used by various professionals involved in the care of a child with high-intensity needs to predict the likelihood of CVI and direct therapeutic interventions. Currently, no such assessment exists. Without appropriate assessments for children with CVI, occupational therapists, and other professionals are unable to plan and deliver effective interventions for these clients. For example, assessments that include subdomains to identify specific areas of disability allow interventions to be targeted in specific areas. The FCVIQ includes subdomains such as visual attention and visual fixation. Using the FCVIQ to identify difficulties in these areas could help therapists tailor interventions to address these needs in particular. The FCVIQ has been researched outside the US, but this project will be the first to adapt the instrument to a US population. We have received permission from the author of the FCVIQ to perform a cross-cultural adaptation (CCA) of the FCVIQ for the US population. This process will involve translation and modification of the original assessment. Once modifications have been made to the translated version of the FCVIQ, the content validity of the new measure will be examined. After establishing content validity, the new US-CVI Questionnaire (US-CVIQ) will require an examination of measurement properties to update and revise scoring methods, e.g., predictive validity, sensitivity and specificity, and construct validity. Recommendation of this new tool will also require evidence of sufficient internal consistency and construct validity (via a confirmatory factor analysis) using the GRADE criteria.
