4e-1 Language and Cognitive Development in Neurodevelopmental Disorders Throughout the Lifespan

Project Description:
Language Development in Neurodevelopmental Disorders Drs. Thurman and Abbeduto have continued research on language and cognitive development in children, adolescents, and young adults with Fragile X syndrome (FXS), Down syndrome (DS), and ASD. They have made progress considering the utility of various assessment approaches in characterizing early language skills in these neurodevelopmental disorders. Their research supports the importance of considering the unique linguistic "signatures" (different areas of relative strength and challenge) observed across developmental disabilities in selecting and applying assessment for monitoring treatment efficacy over time. Because outcome measures inform our understanding of phenotypes, development, and decision-making concerning the effectiveness of treatment approaches, these efforts support descriptive and clinical research practices. They will continue to characterize best practices in assessment procedures and examine the efficacy of multi-modal treatments of language problems that empower parents to be agents of change and use telehealth technology to decrease the cost and burden and increase the accessibility of treatment.
