Meaningful Inclusion of Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities in PCOR & CER: A Rural Approach to Health Outcomes

Project Description:
In 2018, WIND created the ESRN in response to the lack of community engaged research in the state. It is a community and practice-based research network designed to create a sustainable research infrastructure that focuses on rural health issues using community based participatory research principles (CBPR)23. This is an extension of the Practice Based Research Networks (PBRNs) movement that is based primarily in primary care practices31,32. In particular, the ESRN adds the broader community to the research process, which has been critical for Wyoming considering the profound healthcare shortages in the state. Given the power of CBPR and the earlier success of the ESRN, we will leverage this existing infrastructure to design strategies for meaningful engagement, inclusion and training of individuals with IDD related to PCOR/CER. We will focus on rural health issues that are most important to this community and the project will expand the network to include individuals with IDD and their families, members of community organizations that provide services and supports to this community, and the broader range of community organizations including childhood development centers, schools and school nursing offices/clinics, community services organizations and other organizations related to patient-centered models of care delivery.
