Project Description:
There is a continuing shortage of personnel to provide needed services and to support the inclusion of individuals with developmental disabilities in their communities in all ages of life course. In term of services more attention is needed for transitional services for networking and for community inter-agency collaboration. Services are scarce and inaccessible, especially in the rural areas and locations out of the San Juan metropolitan area. Also there is a need to develop and implement research and evaluation strategies to insure compliance with program standards and to measure achievement and limitation in regards to propose goals and objectives. The program is aim to offer Technical assistance to individuals, families, students and service providers and to disseminate information such as: educational materials and service protocols, curricular and others in a variety of formats. The goals that support the mission of the PRUCEDD are as follows: 1. To provide interdisciplinary training and continuing community education to professionals, Para professionals, family members and individuals with DD; 2. To provide services that demonstrates exemplary approaches in clinical/educational and community settings for individuals with DD and their families; 3. To conduct research regarding culturally-competent models of service that builds the capacity of service and supports systems to promote the independence, productivity, integration and inclusion of individuals with DD and their families; 4a. To provide technical assistance to individuals with DD, families, programs, agencies and organizations to promote independence, integration, productivity and the quality of life of individuals with DD and their families; 4b. To disseminate information related to the implementation of best practices that increase the independence, productivity of individuals with DD and that promote their integration and inclusion into the community; The benefits expected are in areas such as: practice, policy, theory and or research, unserved and underserved populations and individuals with disabilities. Following are examples of the work in some of these areas of practice the PRUCEDD have handle services in childcare, services for children in the interdisciplinary project for excellence and in transition (in collaboration with the rehabilitation agency). As an example of the underserved population effort, the program developed a community base self-advocacy and empowerment of individuals with DD Project and a Health Care Service Clinics for Elders with DD (in collaboration with the MSC Department of medicine)
