Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility
Project Description:
STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility) includes an inclusive team of trainers at the CIDD at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Trainers with and without developmental and other disabilities lead workshops to build skills and knowledge, support leadership options for people with disabilities, and serve as a resource for CIDD programs and activities. Project STIR offers technical assistance and training to self-advocates, family members, and professionals using a variety of approaches including hands-on activities, small group discussion, and video. Examples of topics include: Becoming a strong self-advocate, networking with self-advocacy groups, principles and guidelines of self-determination, transitioning into the community, leadership, and independence. Technical assistance and training is provided throughout NC.
