Project Description:
STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility) is an inclusive team of trainers at the CIDD at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Trainers with and without developmental and other disabilities lead workshops that build skills and knowledge, creating leadership options for people with disabilities. Project STIR develops and delivers training directly to self-advocates, family members, and professionals using a variety of approaches including scenarios, hands-on activities, small group discussion, and video. Topics of workshops include: How to be a self-advocate, How to start a self-advocacy group, Keeping a self-advocacy group going, principles and guidelines of self-determination, transitioning into the community, leadership, and self-determination. Workshops include an historical perspective of self-determination; technical assistance is available. Training is provided throughout NC and across the country.
