Project Description:
Last updated by ZD per BK edits 9/11/17 - A partnership through AUCD with five UCEDD to provide a nutrition education intervention for people with disabilities and their families. According to CDC data, people with disabilities are even less likely than those without to eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, with nearly 35% reporting they eat less than one serving per day. They have an obesity rate 57% higher than people without disabilities, are twice as likely to have high blood pressure, and five times as likely to get diabetes. There is an acute hands-on need for nutrition education in communities of people with disabilities most at-risk. This Nutrition Is for Everyone program is using the AUCD-CDC Act Early Ambassador model the Ambassador model to raise awareness and create behavior change in people with disabilities related to healthy eating and accessing fruits and vegetables. Goals of the project are to conduct events to raise awareness of need for nutrition education for people with disabilities and their families and friends; to conduct nutrition education trainings; to seek to develop state and local partnerships to improve healthy eating and include people with disabilities it the planning. A social media component for the Tennessee project is using FaceBook (Nutrition is for everyone TN), Pinterest (nutrition is for everyone TN, and Twitter (Nutrition4allTN). Expected benefits include increased knowledge about the relation of fruit and vegetable intake and healthy eating to improved health, inclusion of people with disabilities into partnerships and planning across the state, and having people actually eat more fruits and vegetables, or a wider variety, in people who have undergone training.
