Assistive Technology Technical Assistance

Center:
Fiscal Year:

Project Description:
Idaho school districts will always have a need for ongoing assistive technology technical assistance, especially when attempting to serve students with more complex technology-related needs. IDEA requires that all teams consider AT during the IEP process and it is sometimes difficult educators to keep up with this rapidly advancing field. The IATP in collaboration with the SDE will continue to offer technical assistance related to AT to school districts across Idaho. The focus of this service has been child-centered and team-based and is designed to increase the capacity of school staff to deliver appropriate AT services. Project will provide support and training to districts for individual student assistive technology assessment, training, and TA services. This program is designed to reflect research and legislation that suggest AT specialists and professionals who work with AT need to understand the theory and rationale underlying the use of AT. Additionally, school staff must be highly skilled in consultation, assessment, evaluation and training, and have specific skills and knowledge using AT devices. The project will conduct statewide, regional, and school district trainings at the local level. Districts will be identified through request to meet the needs of districts and/or IEP teams. The trainings will focus on the action plans developed during the initial assessment service. Districts will be encouraged to invite surrounding schools to participate in training to help build their capacity in the delivery of AT services. The project will work with the Idaho Interagency Council on Secondary Transition to host the "Tools for LIfe: Transition and Technology Fair."
