Project Description:
A Capacity-Building Summit on Postsecondary Education (PSE) for Students with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities The purpose of this project is to support efforts of the North Carolina Postsecondary Education (PSE) Alliance to enhance college access services to students with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD). Funding is for an expanded Postsecondary Education Capacity-Building Summit, following a successful Summit in 11-12. This collaborative opportunity allows participants to share information, expertise, and planning approaches to expand college-based PSE opportunities for NC students with I/DD. The project includes two primary activities/services. (1) NC PSE Alliance co-facilitators, faculty at Carolina Institute for Developmental Disabilities, UNC-Chapel Hill, will partner with NC Community College System (NCCCS) Associate Director for Student Development Services and NC PSE Alliance members. This team will host/present the second annual PSE Capacity-Building Summit, expanding it to two days with follow-up support to more comprehensively provide resources and technical support. Attendees are expected to include secondary-school level participants, college representatives, family groups, and community organizations interested in developing PSE options for students with I/DD at colleges and universities. (2) CFNC Pathways Partnership Director will work with NC PSE Alliance Co-facilitators and NCCCS Associate Director for Student Development Services to provide a link to NC PSE programs and specific resources on the CFNC.org web site. As a result of participating in the second annual PSE Capacity-Building Summit, 75% of the projected 200 Summit participants will report a pragmatic awareness of resources and opportunities related to postsecondary education for students with I/DD as demonstrated by responses to a survey administered three months post-Summit. At least one regional group of participants will have begun the planning process for developing an additional PSE as demonstrated by a strategic plan draft. As a result of interacting with CIDD/PSEA, 100% of North Carolina PSE options on college campuses will be included in a program directory as demonstrated by a dedicated directory web page on CFNC.org. Evaluation and survey responses from the 11-12 PSE Capacity-Building Summit indicate strong interest in an expanded Summit for 1213--from a one-day to a two-day event to include more PSE planning time for attendees. Responses also indicate a need to increase the number and range of participants served by the Summit by adding family members, guidance counselors, and teams from additional regions that are developing PSEs. These changes allow the Summit to build on the progress and momentum generated by the 1112 Summit.
