Ohio Service Inclusion Project
Project Description:
The Ohio State University Center Nisonger Center is the training and technical assistance provider for all Ohio National Service programs (i.e. AmeriCorps, SeniorCorps, and Learn and Serve) on issues related to disability inclusion. Dr. Fish and Ms. Ober provide the following services:
1 Analyze member position descriptions and other program materials to identify ways to be more inclusive of people with disabilities
2 Review current recruitment practices as they relate to potential placement of people with disabilities
3 Facilitate partnerships between local National Service programs and local disability organizations
4 Provide technical assistance on such issues as reasonable accommodation
5 Provide disability education and awareness training for program staff and members
These activities are designed to increase the participation of people with disabilities as members and volunteers in national and community service.
Nisonger staff also conduct an annual, online survey of all AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs in Ohio to determine the extent to which these programs are including people with disabilities. Further, Nisonger staff coordinate the Statewide Service Inclusion Committee as well as organize regional Service Inclusion Meetings to assist local disability and service organizations in connecting with one another.
