1 - Core Funding: ADD - Administration on Developmental Disabilities
Project Description:
Core funding was requested for the Nisonger Center, a University Center of Excellence (UCE) on Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (MR/DD) at Ohio State University. With an annual budget of $3.5 million -- about 50 percent higher than when we applied for core funding five years earlier -- Nisonger UCE's areas of programmatic emphasis are early intervention and education, health and related care, and employment. In FY 02, Nisonger UCE trained 227 medical and postgraduate students at a variety of interdisciplinary training clinics, community agencies, rural county health departments, and public school sites. Additionally, the Nisonger UCE trained 90 direct care staff via an internet course and 6,698 agency staff and consumers at special events such as workshops. In FY 02, Nisonger UCE provided medical, clinical, or education services for 3,186 people and families with MR/DD -- our services for rural health care and for dual diagnosis (mental illness and developmental delay) have been nationally recognized. Additionally, we provided 5,347 hours of technical assistance to the U.S. Department of Justice, Ohio corporations, state agencies, public schools in Ohio, consumer groups, and to community agencies on matters pertaining to civil rights, abuse prevention, self-determination training, inclusion, access, medications, and program evaluation. Nisonger UCE disseminates manuals on women's health care, consumer guides for medications, and training videos on independent living. Nisonger UCE is a rare site for NIH-sponsored scientific research aimed at finding effective medications for autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions. We are active in training consumers in self-determination and in hiring and involving consumers in our UCE.
