Project Description:
STIR (Steps Toward Independence and Responsibility) is a team of trainers at the CIDD at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with and without developmental and other disabilities. STIR workshops build knowledge and help create leadership options for people with disabilities. STIR develops and delivers training directly to self-advocates, parents, family members, and professionals. STIR uses a variety of approaches including scenarios, hands-on activities, small group discussions, and video. Topics of workshops include: How to be a self-advocate, How to start a self-advocacy group, Keeping a self-advocacy group going, Basic principles and guidelines of self-determination, Transitioning into the community, Leadership, and Self-Determination. Also includes an historical perspective of self-determination and technical assistance is available. Training is provided throughout NC and across the country.
