YoungStar Dual Language Learners and EC Mentoring Projects
Project Description:
Goal:Professional Peer Mentoring
Create paid opportunities for employed teachers and/or administrators who work in an early childhood setting to have an immersion experience in a UW campus center, where they will have a mentoring relationship with an exemplary teacher and in turn receive coaching from that teacher at their employment site.
Needs that will be addressed
Individuals in the workforce who lack experience and training need exposure to high quality early childhood environments with experienced staff. There are few opportunities, often for those who need the most professional development, to have the support and guidance needed to improve the quality of their practices. This project will address the need through immersion and coaching/ mentoring experiences.
Expected Results
? Written program description and guidance
? Completion of at least 1 pilot immersion and mentor/coaching experience in Dane County
? Evaluation information from the pilot experience with suggestions for future implementation of the program.

Explore the capacity within the UW-System and potential to respond to the growing statewide need for addressing DLL/ELL for young children.
Needs that will be addressed.
At a recent meeting of State leaders representing a number of early childhood programs (e.g., Head Start, early childhood special education, early intervention, mental health), significant and growing needs were identified for the early childhood field to be culturally and linguistically responsive to young children who are Dual Language/English Language Learners and their families. This YoungStar initiative provides opportunities for the UW-System to explore their current and future capacity to address these significant needs.
Expected Results
Hold 3 planning sessions with approximately 25-30 UW System faculty/ staff and community partners
