AmeriCorps - Young Adult Transition Corps (YATC)
Project Description:
Young Adult Transition Corps (YAT C), an AmeriCorps program of The Ohio State University Nisonger Center on Excellence in Disabilities, is designed to serve youth with disabilities (YWD) (ages 16-22) that are transitioning from school to adult life. Studies have shown that students with disabilities who graduate from high school often experience poor adjustment to adult life, evidenced by low employment rates, low wages, and low rates of participation in post-secondary education and vocational training programs. To address this need, TC will provide services in three areas critical to successful transition outcomes. These areas include community service, community access training, and social skill development.
Members of YAT C will be people with disabilities/college students who will support YWD in activities related to the three components of YAT C. Community service activities will include participating in existing AmeriCorps program activities, as well as a variety of community-based efforts designed by YAT C members and participating YWD. Community access training will help YWD become more familiar with community agencies and services. YAT C members will assist YWD to become aware of social cues and safety hazards, as well as how to access public transportation. Social skill development will involve group team building, group counseling, friendship and informal support.
Mission: Transition Corps is committed to improving the quality of life for youth with disabilities who are transitioning from school to adult life through activities that promote community service, community access, and social skill development.
