It is essential that people with intellectual disability are included in research on mental illness. Second, funding must be directed to exploring mental distress in people with profound disabilities. Finally, emerging technologies, such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices and automatic machine learning, hold promise for more accurate identification and more effective treatment of mental distress in people with profound disabilities
