Policy Issues

Everything in our world affects people with disabilities. Laws about healthcare, housing, transportation, personal rights, jobs, and schools all change how people live. Because of this, every new law or policy is important to the disability community. “Policy” is a set of ground rules for a group or community.

At AUCD, we believe that having a disability is a part of being human. People with disabilities must be part of every conversation about policies that change their lives. We focus on these ;main areas:

  • Rights: Making sure everyone is treated fairly.
  • Education: Helping everyone learn and succeed.
  • Jobs: Making sure people can find quality work and opportunities to support themselves.
  • Healthcare: Helping people see doctors and stay healthy.
  • Support Systems: Strengthening programs that serve the disability community.

Putting People First

At AUCD, people with disabilities are the most important part of what we do. Policies are better when they are made by people who actually live with disabilities. We believe that you can't make a rule about someone without talking to them first. Their ideas and leadership help us know what to work on.

Our team includes leaders with disabilities who work in universities and communities. We help make sure they are heard by the government in your town, in your state, and across the country. We want everyone to have a chance to use their voice.

Nothing About Us Without Us

We follow a famous motto: Nothing About Us Without Us.

This means:

  • People with disabilities are included in everything we do.
  • We want to inspire real teamwork that creates real change.
  • We help people use their voices and become leaders.
  • We make sure our meetings and papers are easy for everyone to use and understand.
  • We fight for things that people with disabilities say they need most.
