Disability Training Network for the TAMU System

Project Description:
Each year, an increasing number of students with disabilities enter postsecondary education. After entering postsecondary education, however, students with disabilities have a lower rate of returning/staying in college and graduating with a degree. Efforts to solving these problems have primarily been focused on helping students with disabilities make adjustments to post-secondary education (e.g., self-advocacy, systematic planning, awareness of differences between college and high school). But, an important area that has not been adequately addressed is the faculty and administrator's lack of training in instructional strategies, particularly pertaining to students with disabilities. In response to the needs, the Disability Training Network for the TAMU System (DTN) provides systematic training and technical assistance to the faculty and administrator at the nine institutions within the TAMU System. The Network serves an overall goal of increasing the competencies of the faculty and administrator in providing students with disabilities a quality postsecondary education. The training and technical assistance provided by the DTN emphasizes understanding the unique needs of students with disabilities, providing effective instruction and services to these students, and increasing the academic performances of students with disabilities. Faculty and administrators who receive training will increase their competencies in working with students with disabilities.
