Family Support Minority Outreach
Project Description:
The state of Michigan received funding from the ADD to: 1) extend the family support outreach program to minority families who are underserved or unserved; 2) provide trainings to professionals who serve minority families; 3) establish an interagency commitment to culturally responsive services for sustained outreach to minority families; and 4) evaluate the project process, effectiveness, and outcomes. The Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI) sponsored a contest to create a poster to be displayed at agencies that serve families who have children with disabilities. The poster reflects the agency's commitment to treat all families with respect; serve families from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds; and recognize and affirm families' values, customs and beliefs. Many people submitted artwork to the contest. An ethnically diverse panel of judges, which included family members of people with disabilities and professionals who support people with disabilities, selected a winner. In addition to the selection of the winning poster, DDI worked with the artist and representatives from a number of culturally distinct organizations throughout Michigan to translate the word "respect" into multiple languages. This translation was incorporated into a border surrounding the artwork to enhance and extend the relevance of the poster to a larger number of families.
