Population-Based Surv. of Autism Spectrum Disorders & Other Dev. Disabilities
Project Description:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)is the ultimate challenge in the disability field as it has the mmost unanswered questions regarding etiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, clinical intevention, need for an interdisciplinary approach, systems of care and funding issues. Surveillance for ASD is critical to unraveling the mystery of ASD from a scientific and policy standpoint. This project will help answer the question of prevalence, so that we can work backward to etiology and work forward to services, service systems and funding.
The AR ADDM is developing a prevalence database for Arkansas by identifying from educational and clinical records, 8 year-old-children who meet criteria for ASD, a collection of syndromes and disorders characterized by impairments in socialization, verbal and nonverbal communication and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior.
