Supported Employment in Utah
Project Description:
The 2005 Utah State Legislature requested information on why the number of people with disabilities served in supported employment had been declining. Subsequently, the Division of Services for People with Disabilities (DSPD) and the Utah State Office of Rehabilitiation (VR) requested that the University of Utah and Utah State University cooperate in conduting an evaluation of supported employment in the state. The Center for Persons with Disablities Outreach Divison focused on issues important to students transitioning from special education to adult life. Outreach staff (1)reviewed federal special education laws related to transition (2) interviewed state office of education staff (3) reviewed data on the number of student transitioning from special eduation to adult life and(4)conducted focus groups with school district special education administrators, families with children in school, families with children on a waiting list for special education services, families with children receiving supported employment services, and speical education teachers. A report summarizing the data was developed, incorporated into a larger report on supported employment, and submitted to DSPD and VR.
