Project Description:
Transition from high school to adult life can be difficult for students with disabilities. Supported by IDEA 97 mandates and current research, persons interested in transition have affirmed that self-determination is a critical component of the process. The goal of the Louisiana Youth Leadership Forum (LYLF) is to replicate a proven transition model within one state. The LYLF will implement four objectives: 1) Sponsor a 4-day leadership forum each summer for 35 high school students with disabilities; 2) Identify for outreach components of the model most effective in increasing both self-determination abilities and postschool outcomes; 3) Evaluate the impact of the LYLF; and 4) Disseminate replication materials and evaluation data nationally. The proposed awardee for this grant is the Human Development Center (HDC). However, the LYLF will operate as a collaborative project effort among HDC, Families Helping Families (FHF), and the Governor?s Office of Disability Affairs (GODA). The LYLF is designed to accomplish four outcomes. First, 35 adolescents with disabilities will participate each project year in the LYLF. Second, 30 adults with disabilities will be identified each project year to serve as role models. Third, the LYLF will be operational in all 64 of Louisiana?s parishes (counties). These outcomes will enable the LYLF both to continue beyond federal funding and to provide measurable evidence of maintenance and growth in participants? self-determination abilities and postschool outcomes. Fourth, replication materials, evaluation data, and training opportunities will be disseminated nationally via inservice training to professionals, families, and self-advocates.
