Project Description:
This project has been developed to enhance access to Positive Behavioral Supports as a behavioral intervention for Alaskan children who experience Fetal Alcohol Specturm Disorders (FASD). Between two and five teams of professioanls and family members, at eight sites across Alaska, will receive training in Positive Behavioral Support strategies. Teams will learn how to assess challenging behavior and determine its communicative function; modify the child's environment to reduce the curcumstances which can trigger behavior; develop effective, non-aversive strategies for reducing the occurrence of the behavior; teach more socially appropriate replacement behaviors and eliminate maintaining outcomes for the behavior. A systematic evaluation of the PBS process will determine the effectiveness of PBS as an empirically validated intervention for use with children who experience FASD.
