Promoting Success in Algebra by Integrating Best Practices in Small-Group Learning with AI
Project Description:
Project: This is a Planning grant from the NSF FINDERS FOUNDRY program to develop a technology platform with an integrated AI tutor that enables teachers and students to realize the academic and social benefits of small-group learning (Cooperative Learning, CL) in Algebra classes. Our platform assists teachers in managing student groups, conducting observations, and monitoring student work during the lesson. Student groups submit their work to an AI tutor and receive either (a) approval to move ahead to the next problem, or (b) constructive feedback designed to help the group find the right answer. Student groups are also able to submit questions directly to the tutor to assist their learning. The dashboard consolidates the AI feedback so the teacher can track the status and progress of each group, identify common misunderstandings across groups, and pinpoint groups that need additional assistance. Our integrated platform goes beyond a one-to-one AI tutor that interacts with only one student; instead, students receive the academic and social benefits of group work alongside the AI tutor's assistive support. The AI tutor acts as the first tier of support, reducing delays as groups wait for feedback, and the teacher becomes the second tier of support for those groups identified by the dashboard as needing extra help.
