Supported Decision-Making for Physicians & Healthcare System Leaders
Project Description:
Supported decision making (SDM) agreements were recognized as legal documents in AZ on June 20, 2023, when Senate Bill 1291, was signed into law. Practicing physicians in Arizona and other health care providers are not well educated or trained about legal issues surrounding the transition of children with ID/D to adulthood. Educational efforts about SDM in Arizona have not been targeted to physicians. Additionally, physicians face organizational barriers to implementation of SDM in their practices.
In order to enhance SDM readiness amongst physicians in Arizona, this project will:
1. Conduct an "SDM Physician Survey" of Arizona physicians and healthcare organization leaders to define knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and policy/workflow barriers;
2. Submit an "Arizona SDM Readiness Report", which identifies knowledge, attitude, and behavior gaps among practicing physicians, as well as barriers to SDM implementation encountered in health care systems.
3. Create "Supported Decision-Making for Physicians" an evidence-based, annotated PowerPoint slide set on SDM and Arizona SB 1291 specifically.
4. Deliver "SDM Physician Training" presentations statewide to health care providers, supported by freely accessible online materials.
5. Develop an "SDM Systems Barriers Work Plan", a proposed plan to address systems barriers identified in the Arizona SDM Readiness Report, which would form the basis of a potential second year of work supported by Arizona Developmental Disabilities Planning Council.
