Health Communication Experiences of Amharic-speaking Families of Persons with Developmental Disabilities

Project Description:

The purpose of this study is to elicit the experiences of Amharic-speaking family members of persons with developmental disabilities (DD) in the Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia (DMV) metropolitan area, who may have Limited English Proficiency (LEP), about their communication experiences with health and mental health care providers. Founder and president of EESNC, a community-organization serving this population, serves as a community partner and cultural broker for this project. Applying a mixed methods research, this survey will 1) employ multilingual surveys and interviews with families of persons with DD to understand their communication experiences with care providers, and perceived cultural and linguistic barriers, and 2) convene a data walk with the Ethiopian community to present key findings, and create a tip sheet for health and mental health care providers on how communication can be improved. This pilot study is funded by the Thrive Center for Children, Families, and Communities.
