Fiscal Year:
2026

Project Description:
Since 2001, NCHAM has organized an annual National Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Conference that brings together approximately 1,000 attendees including those who: work in state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs; assist in EHDI efforts on the federal level; provide screening, diagnostic and early intervention support at the state/ local level to young children with hearing loss and their families; champion Medical Home activities within each state; are parents of children with hearing loss; or are deaf or hard-of-hearing adults who are helping to expand opportunities for young children with hearing loss. Because conference attendees always include 60-80 people whose primary mode of communication is American Sign Language (ASL) all plenary, podium presentations and Instructional Sessions have captioning and ASL interpreting so that the conference is more accessible. NCHAM secured a competitively awarded R-13 grant for five years beginning with the 2026 Conference to help defray the cost of ASL interpreting services. The grant is for $60,000 per year and can only be used to pay for ASL interpreting and related accessibility services.
