Project Description:
Adults with disabilities experience significantly higher rates of mental distress, social isolation, and barriers to accessing mental health services than the general population. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, adults with disabilities report frequent mental distress at nearly five times the rate of adults without disabilities. Many individuals face additional challenges, including limited financial resources, inadequate health insurance coverage, transportation barriers, and a shortage of mental health professionals who are adequately trained to address the unique needs and lived experiences of people with disabilities. As a result, many adults with disabilities remain underserved and disconnected from meaningful sources of emotional support and community engagement. The Peer-to-Peer Support Circle Hawaiʻi addresses this critical need by promoting mental health, emotional well-being, and social connectedness among adults with disabilities through a community-based, peer-led support model. The overall goal of the program is to create an inclusive and accessible environment where participants can build supportive relationships, share experiences, strengthen resilience, and develop a greater sense of belonging. Program objectives include reducing social isolation, increasing social and community participation, improving emotional well-being, strengthening self-advocacy and communication skills, and providing access to supportive resources and mental health information. A distinctive feature of the program is its integration of the Philosophy for Children Hawaiʻi (p4cHI) Community of Inquiry approach. Through guided dialogue and collaborative discussion, participants are encouraged to reflect on personal experiences, explore meaningful topics, and engage in respectful conversations where every voice is valued. This approach promotes critical thinking, self-expression, confidence, and mutual understanding while fostering a strong sense of community. Another unique aspect of the program is its emphasis on peer leadership. Support circles are facilitated by trained individuals with disabilities who bring lived experience and serve as trusted role models. Their leadership helps create authentic connections and empowers participants to build self-determination, leadership, and advocacy skills. The program also incorporates periodic participation by licensed mental health counselors who provide mental health education, emotional support, and referrals to community resources when needed. This combination of peer support and professional guidance creates a comprehensive support system that promotes wellness while helping participants access appropriate services. In addition, the program creates meaningful employment and leadership opportunities for people with disabilities by training and compensating peer facilitators, thereby advancing economic inclusion and community leadership. Expected benefits of the program include improved mental health and emotional well-being, reduced feelings of loneliness and isolation, stronger social networks, increased self-confidence, and greater community participation among adults with disabilities. Participants will gain practical skills in communication, self-advocacy, and relationship-building while developing supportive peer connections that contribute to long-term wellness. Peer facilitators will benefit through leadership development, workforce experience, and enhanced professional skills. Ultimately, the Peer-to-Peer Support Circle Hawaiʻi will strengthen community inclusion, promote self-determination, and provide a sustainable, culturally responsive model of support that empowers adults with disabilities to lead healthier, more connected, and fulfilling lives.
