Implementation and evaluation of an optimized digital emotion regulation program for middle schoolers.
Project Description:
Project Title: Implementation and Evaluation of an Optimized Digital Emotion Regulation Program for Middle SchoolersDescription:This project operates as Project 1 under the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) funded P50 ACCESS Center (Grant #P50 MH139449; Center MPIs: Stormshak & Seeley). Led by sub-project Principal Investigators W. Hadley and C. Knowles, this initiative targets early adolescents to address escalating youth mental health concerns. The project focuses on the systematic deployment, evaluation, and optimization of a school-based digital technology platform designed to build active coping mechanisms and emotion regulation (ER) skills in middle school students.
By embedding scalable digital health tools directly into a school's existing Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), the project tests varying structural delivery formats (e.g., self-paced vs. teacher-led modules) to maximize student engagement and retention. Iterative design adjustments and optimization choices are guided by feedback panels of middle schoolers, parents, and school personnel. Ultimate project evaluation measures real-world student outcomes, including self-reported emotional distress, peer relationships, and behavioral disruptions, providing an evidence-based framework for school districts with limited counseling resources.
