Oregon Tribal Motivational Interviewing Project 2025-2027
Project Description:
1. Purpose. The purpose of the Contract is to enlist the services of the identified Contractor to provide technical assistance services which include staff and tribal training, consultation and ongoing support for the implementation of culturally informed Motivational Interviewing (MI) to participating federally recognized tribes of Oregon.
2. Background. It is understood that the identified Contractor is culturally informed. The Oregon Tribal MI Project is supported by the Center on Human Development (CHD). The CHD is devoted to serving tribal programs in delivering and strengthening effective native-centered evidence-based and experience-based practices. The MI program has provided Motivational Interviewing Essentials training, Enhancing MI Skills, and Quality Assurance tool options in partnership with the Confederated tribes of Grand Ronde, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, The Cow Creek Tribe, The Klamath Tribe, the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, The Confederated Tribe of Siletz Indians, the Burns-Paiute Tribe, The Confederated Tribe of Warm Springs, and the Coquille Tribe over the past 30 months.
3. The culturally informed MI goals are to:
a. Increase knowledge and skills to motivate people toward change,
b. Acknowledge and promote the Spirit and Style of MI in tribal programs,
c. Help native parents and children identify their strengths and needs,
d. Empower native families to address specific needs,
e. Empower tribal program staff to practice MI to fidelity, and
f. Create sound implementation and sustainability policies and procedures within each participating tribe honoring and incorporating each tribe's unique needs and practices.
4. The focus of the Oregon Tribal MI Project is to help ensure Native American and Alaskan native communities have ready access to culturally informed prevention practices, addiction treatment, recovery and mental health services provided through a collaborative and integrative network of care that effectively improves health and wellbeing. Foremost, the program honors sovereignty and the work draws upon the diverse and unique cultures, ceremonies, customs, and teachings of American Indians and Alaska Natives for strength, wisdom, and guidance and upholds traditional and integrative approaches to health and self-care and strives to achieve a balance in mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness.
