Children's Behavioral Health
Project Description:
In 2004 the University of Alaska, Alaska Division of Behavioral Health, and the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority created the Behavioral Health Initiative Program, intended to address current and anticipated shortages in qualified persons to serve children and adults in Alaska?s behavioral health system. A part of that initiative, the Occupational Endorsement Certificate, Children?s Residential Services (CRS) Program was funded to provide competency-based education to those individuals providing direct care to children and youth in residential therapeutic settings. Approved in spring 2007, the Occupational Endorsement Certificate, Children's Residential Services is a 16-credit occupational endorsement offered by the Center for Human Development. The five courses that make up the program were designed to help students acquire the unique skill set required to work in the children's services system of care. The courses were developed with representatives from the behavioral health service system. Representatives included industry leaders, State of Alaska Division of Behavioral Health staff, and members of the Bring the Kids Home (BTKH) Workforce Development Sub-committee. This certificate program also serves as a first step for those students seeking more advanced academic programs.
