Project Description:
The Subminimum Wage to Competitive Integrated Employment (SWTCIE) Innovative Model Demonstration Project is a five-year federal grant funded by U.S. Department of Education for the Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) to provide increased opportunity for California SWTCIE project (CSP) participants - students and youth with disabilities seeking subminimum wage employment and potential vocational rehabilitation (VR) program applicants or VR-eligible individuals with disabilities who are employed or contemplating employment at subminimum wage - to obtain competitive integrated employment (CIE). The grant activities will increase CIE outcomes, economic self-sufficiency, independence, and inclusion. UCLA Tarjan Center will provide employer supports, business engagement, and training and technical assistance in relation to implementation of academic curriculum in support of CSP by developing and disseminating learning modules to employers, conducting employer outreach and networking, and providing training and technical assistance in areas of teaching methods and curriculum planning to the two community college partners as needed to enhance the preparation, hiring and retention of individuals with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD). The assistance provided by UCLA Tarjan Center will help to address the longstanding barriers to employment for individuals with ID/DD and evidence-based approaches for the preparation and successful achievement of employment by participants with ID/DD.
