Project Description:
Jump Start to Talk: Understanding Diverse Perspectives from Parents and Teachers to Rethink and Improve Identification, Referral, and Service for Dual Language Learner Late Talkers. Funding for this project helps researchers examine how caregivers and early childhood education (ECE) teachers understand and respond to late-talking dual language learners (DLLs) in two underserved Miami-Dade County communities: Hispanic (Spanish/English) and Haitian American (Creole/English). Using a dual-community comparative approach with cultural brokers, our research addresses two primary aims. The first aim examines how participants identify language delays in DLLs, understand typical versus delayed development, and determine timing for evaluation and referral. The second aim explores barriers and facilitators to early support service access, comparing challenges between Spanish- and Haitian Creole-speaking communities and developing strategies to improve service engagement.
