Project Description:
The addition of clinical services for participants in research projects such as the 22q11.2 Healthy Minds translational clinic and the young adult social skills and employment research by Dr. Solomon, and community implementation studies such as training Part C providers in evidence-based caregiver coaching methods, are examples of the added dimensions that the CEDD brings to the MIND Institute's research activities. Aubyn Stahmer, Ph.D. and colleagues have several projects that involve community-based participatory research methods aimed at improving the use of evidence-based practices in underserved/low resource areas. Most efficacious interventions for autism have been tested in White, middle-class samples seen in clinic settings, with communities of color rarely reflected as research participants and few tested in under-resourced communities. Almost no research has thoroughly tested the cultural relevance of recommended autism interventions. Dr. Stahmer's research group is addressing this in the context of several projects. Projects include the Autism Intervention Research Network for Behavioral Health (AIR-B) examining methods to implement interventions to engage caregivers of underserved children with autism and other DD. In addition, Drs. Stahmer and Sparapani, in a collaborative R01 with Dr. Brookman-Frazee at UC San Diego, have been working with leaders and providers in schools and community mental health clinics to increase the quality of EBP use for autism. Dr. Stahmer also has three projects that involve examining methods to improve dissemination of evidence-based practices in community settings.
