Project Description:
Early identification and intervention for developmental disorders are critical to the well-being of children and are the responsibility of pediatric professionals as an integral function of the medical home. Our three-year Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) fellowship program, accredited by ACGME and one of 14 funded nationally by HRSA/MCHB, provides intensive training in developmental disorders to 3-4 pediatricians per year. The fellowship includes a didactic curriculum, training in clinical practice, teaching, and research. Three fellows are funded through UCD Health. We have additional funding sources to support faculty efforts for teaching and a Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Training Program Grant (2023-2028) from the US Health Resources and Services Administration, Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Our DBP fellows also participate in the MIND Institutes Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) training program, which has been ongoing since 2016 and the Interdisciplinary Graduate-level Developmental Disabilities Training Program within the CEDD at the MIND Institute. Upon exiting the program, our fellows 1) understand the developmental, behavioral and psychosocial needs of children and families on an individual as well as public policy level; 2) are skilled in collaborating across disciplines and systems of care at local, regional and national levels to provide and promote evidence-based, family centered, culturally competent and compassionate care; and 3) contribute to advancing knowledge in the prevention and treatment of developmental behavioral disorders through research and teaching.
