Project Description:
The purpose of this project is to investigate the feasibility and develop an inclusive post-secondary program, in collaboration with post-secondary partners throughout Wyoming. Faculty and staff at Wyoming Institute for Disabilities (WIND) will lead the creation and facilitation of a statewide alliance that will guide the development of a program plan. The plan will be designed to meet the needs of students with ID, as well as be feasible within the institution(s) implementing this program. That is, we will consult with a broad array of stakeholders to ensure that the program will meet the needs of those with ID to support their participation in post-secondary education, as well as all institutional entities that may have a stake in this work. Approach WIND will apply program standards established by the Model Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities TPSID National Coordinating Center (NCC), to accomplish the following in collaboration with potential Wyoming community college partners, local education agencies, and transition programs. 1) Identify opportunities with local educational agencies (LEAs) to support the transition to college for students with ID who are still eligible or were eligible for special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). 2) Develop individualized supports for the academic, employment, and social inclusion for potential students with ID in academic/ community training courses, campus and community employment, extracurricular activities and other aspects of the institutes of higher education (IHE)regular postsecondary program (e.g., University of Wyoming, Laramie County Community College). 3) Collaborate with community stakeholders, stakeholders from IHE, and service agencies to develop program infrastructure, then to recruit and support students in a pilot program. 4) Integrate person-centered planning in the development of the course of study for each student with ID participating in the model program. This will include completion of the online person–centered thinking training designed by WIND for all participating mentors and students. 5) Submit data to the TPSID NCC, TAPPDINTO-STEM and IMPCCT to evaluate the program. 6) Develop a Comprehensive Transition and Postsecondary Program application to the U.S. Department of Education by the end of the grant period.
